Probing Projections: Interaction Techniques for Interpreting Arrangements and Errors of Dimensionality Reductions

ABSTRACT:

We introduce a group of integrated interaction techniques to interpret and interrogate dimensionality-reduced information. Projection techniques typically aim to create a high-dimensional information space visible in form of a planar layout. But, the meaning of the resulting knowledge projections can be hard to know. It is seldom clear why parts are placed far apart or shut along and therefore the inevitable approximation errors of any projection technique don't seem to be exposed to the viewer. Previous analysis on dimensionality reduction focuses on the economical generation of knowledge projections, interactive customisation of the model, and comparison of different projection techniques. There was only little research on how the visualization ensuing from information projection is interacted with. We tend to contribute the concept of probing as an integrated approach to decoding the which means and quality of visualizations and propose a group of interactive ways to look at dimensionality-reduced data in addition as the projection itself. The methods let viewers see approximation errors, question the positioning of parts, compare them to every other, and visualize the influence of knowledge dimensions on the projection space. We tend to created a internet-based mostly system implementing these ways, and report on findings from an evaluation with information analysts using the prototype to examine multidimensional datasets.
