W-GeoR: Weighted Geographical Routing for VANET’s Health Monitoring Applications in Urban Traffic Networks

ABSTRACT:

The infrastructure-based communication system that is currently in place is susceptible to being destroyed by natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis. In these kinds of situations, Internet of Things-based health monitoring is not feasible. As a result, there is a requirement for additional robust health monitoring frameworks that can provide consistent health monitoring without being dependent on existing communication platforms. It's possible that a Wireless Body Sensor Network (WBSN)-based health monitoring system that uses Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) as a communication medium could be a useful solution for transmitting patients' health information to the closest ambulance or hospital in areas that are prone to emergencies or natural disasters. If emergency care is given to patients who have been injured within the allotted amount of time, it is possible to significantly reduce the number of casualties. Due to the time-sensitive nature of VANET's health monitoring applications, developing a routing algorithm that is both stable and effective is a significant challenge facing the research community. The researchers came up with a number of different routing strategies over the course of their work to cut down on the delay for time-sensitive applications. The purpose of this paper was to propose a Weighted Geographical Routing, or W-GeoR, for VANET's health monitoring applications. The paper focused on the selection of next-hop nodes to facilitate faster dissemination of vital signs and to facilitate post-disaster health monitoring in urban traffic environments. For an optimal next-hop node selection procedure, the proposed protocol made use of traffic-aware information such as traffic mobility, inter-vehicle distances, speed differences, communication link expiration time, channel quality, and proximity factors. A post-disaster scenario is created with SUMO-0.32 and NS-3.23 platforms, and W-GeoR is evaluated using this scenario. The results of simulations demonstrate that W-GeoR performs significantly better than the current protocols considered to be state-of-the-art.
