What is Enough Planning? Results From a Global Quantitative Study

ABSTRACT:

Project coming up with is widely regarded as an vital contributor to project success. But, there is a very little analysis to affirm its impact and give steerage as to how much effort should be spent on coming up with to attain best results. We tend to aim to rectify this omission. Information was collected on 1386 comes from 859 respondents via a global survey. A important relationship was found between the quality of the design deliverables and success. Detailed analysis of the info collected revealed an inverted-U relationship between the percentage of effort spent on designing and project success. Once correcting for key moderator effects, a significant relationship with an R2 of zero.15 was revealed. Any analysis showed that the fraction of planning effort that maximized the project success was twenty fivepercent of project effort. This was substantially additional than the 15percent mean value reported by respondents. The greatest impact was found to be on the broad success measures with a lesser effect on project efficiency: time; budget; and scope. The inverted-U relationship between effort spent on designing and project success indicates that projects can pay too much time in designing, also too little. But we found that projects are spending less time in coming up with than the optimum to achieve best results.
