Traffic awareness and priority For multi-event wireless sensor networks, a contention-based medium access control scheme

PROJECT TITLE :

Priority and Traffic-aware Contention-based Medium Access Control Scheme for Multi-event Wireless Sensor Networks

ABSTRACT:

The growing use of the Internet of Things presents new challenges, one of which is the requirement for a high quality of service (QoS) in multi-priority industrial and domestic sensor networks (IoT). Nodes in Multi-event Wireless Sensor Networks (MWSNs) generate a variety of data packets, classified as either urgent (having a high priority) or normal (having a low priority), with varying proportions of the respective types of traffic. For packets with a high priority, there must be a guarantee of both a faster transmission and a higher level of network reliability. According to the research that has been conducted so far, the medium access control (MAC) protocols that are currently in use for MWSNs only give limited consideration to supporting data priority alongside various traffic proportions. As a result, the purpose of this paper is to propose an energy efficient MAC scheme with the working title of PriTraCon-MAC. This scheme incorporates multi-priority of data packets with dynamic traffic proportion. Multi-event support is provided by PriTraCon-MAC through the utilization of an innovative strategy that dynamically modifies the contention window. This strategy takes into account the existence of four distinct priority levels for the data packets. As a consequence of this, the Request-To-Send frame containing data with a higher priority can be transmitted earlier on during the contention window. This, in turn, leads to the receiver accepting the data more quickly. In addition to that, a mathematical delay analysis using various proportions of priority traffic has also been carried out. In addition, the PriTraCon-MAC protocol has been implemented in OMNET++ Castalia. Its performance has been evaluated in terms of packet delay, reliability, and energy consumption, and it has been compared to the Timeout Multi-priority based-MAC (TMPQ-MAC) protocol that is currently in use under a variety of different network conditions. When compared with the TMPQ-MAC protocol, the results of the simulation show that the PriTraCon-MAC protocol has a significantly lower average delay, a significantly higher packet success rate, and a reduction in energy consumption of up to 80%. All of these benefits are achieved while reducing energy consumption.
