Realistic Deployment of ZigBee and LoRa-based Hybrid Wireless Sensor Networks for Search and Rescue Applications

PROJECT TITLE :

Realistic Deployment of Hybrid Wireless Sensor Networks based on ZigBee and LoRa for Search and Rescue Applications

ABSTRACT:

In the event of an emergency response to a natural or human-caused disaster, search and rescue operations have the primary goal of quickly locating and rescuing potential victims. As a result, prompt action and accurate actions are required. While it is possible that standard communications will be disrupted, a Wireless Sensor Network can be set up to provide assistance to the rescue team. In addition to its many other benefits, this type of network makes it possible to acquire data in close proximity to events and enables persistence over time. Nevertheless, enhancements are required to be made in order to improve the adaption to scenarios like this one. This study presents two Hybrid Wireless Sensor Networks that are based on ZigBee and LoRa. These networks were developed to address some of the challenges that Search and Rescue operations pose to the use of Wireless Sensor Networks. These networks were tested in realistic scenarios in collaboration with first responders. In a similar vein, a number of software advancements that improve the functionality of the networks are discussed here. In conclusion, the findings that were presented as well as the lessons that were learned are supported by a substantial amount of data that was collected during realistic exercises in conjunction with both civilian and military first responders.
