Edge Caching with Mobility Awareness to Reduce Latency in Vehicular Networks

PROJECT TITLE :

Mobility-Aware Edge Caching for Minimizing Latency in Vehicular Networks

ABSTRACT:

In this study, novel proactive caching schemes are proposed for use in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) in order to reduce the amount of time spent waiting for data to be transmitted between vehicles in freeway and city mobility models. The primary idea that lies at the heart of these plans is to make use of information that may already be available a priori regarding the requirements of vehicles and their mobility patterns. We look at two different models: the cooperative model, in which multiple Roadside Units (RSUs) work together to speed up the transfer of information to the intended user, and the non-cooperative model, in which each RSU operates independently of the other RSUs in the network. Both models are discussed in this article. In order to develop the proposed schemes, we first develop optimization problems for each of the models that are being considered. These optimization problems expose the impact of the velocity and demand profile of the vehicle on the decision regarding the optimal caching location. Unfortunately, the developed formulations are NP-hard, and as a result, it is challenging to find solutions for moderate to large problems using these methods. We use the insight gained through these formulations to develop practical caching algorithms based on the knapsack problem and suboptimal relaxations in order to get around this difficulty. These algorithms are based on the knapsack problem. It has been demonstrated that using these algorithms will result in solutions that are very close to optimal while significantly reducing the amount of computation that is required in comparison to the corresponding exhaustive search. Based on the findings of our numerical investigations, it appears that the proposed proactive caching schemes offer significant improvements over the conventional caching policy as well as their respective reactive baselines that do not utilize caching. In addition, the non-cooperative strategies have a number of disadvantages while the cooperative ones have a significant number of advantages.
