Full duplex cognitive radio: a new design paradigm for enhancing spectrum usage

ABSTRACT:

With the fast growth of demand for ever increasing knowledge rates, spectrum resources have become additional and more scarce. As a promising technique to extend the efficiency of the spectrum utilization, cognitive radio has nice potential to meet such a requirement by allowing unlicensed users to coexist in licensed bands. In typical CR systems, spectrum sensing is performed at the beginning of every time slot before knowledge transmission. Unfortunately, this leads to 2 major issues: transmission time reduction due to sensing, and sensing accuracy impairment thanks to data transmission. To tackle these issues, in this article we gift a replacement style paradigm for future CR by exploring full duplex techniques to realize simultaneous spectrum sensing and information transmission. With FD radios equipped at secondary users (SUs), the SUs will simultaneously sense and access the vacant spectrum, and therefore significantly improve sensing performance whereas increasing information transmission potency. The aim of this text is to rework the promising conceptual framework into a sensible wireless network design by addressing a diverse set of challenges like protocol design and theoretical analysis. Several application situations with FD-enabled CR are elaborated, and key open analysis directions and novel algorithms in these systems are mentioned.
