Building Energy Management Systems: The Age of Intelligent and Adaptive Buildings

ABSTRACT:

Building automation systems (BAS), or building management systems (BCS), usually incorporates building energy management systems (BEMSs), physical security and access control, hearth/life safety, and alternative systems (elevators, public announcements, and closed-circuit television). BEMSs management heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and lighting systems in buildings; a lot of specifically, they control HVAC's primary parts like air handling units (AHUs), chillers, and heating parts. BEMSs are essential parts of modern buildings, tasked with seemingly contradicting necessities?minimizing energy consumption while maintaining occupants? comfort [1]. In the United States, regarding 40percent of total energy consumption and 70percent of electricity consumption are spent on buildings every year. These numbers are corresponding to global statistics that about 30percent of total energy consumption and 60p.c of electricity consumption are spent on buildings. Buildings are an integral half of world cyber-physical systems (sensible cities) and evolve and interact with their surroundings. As buildings endure years of exploitation, their thermal characteristics deteriorate, indoor spaces (particularly in business buildings) get rearranged, and usage patterns amendment. In time, their inner (and outer) microclimates modify to changes in surrounding buildings, overshadowing patterns, and city climates, not to say building retrofitting. So, even in cases of ideally designed BEMS/HVAC systems, as a result of of ever-changing and uncertain indoor and out of doors environments, their performance frequently falls in need of expectations. Unfortunately, the complexity of BEMSs, large amounts of continually changing data, and evolving interrelations among sensor feeds build identifying these suboptimal behaviors troublesome. Therefore, ancient knowledge-mining algorithms and data-analysis tools are typically inadequate.This article provides an overview of problems related to trendy BEMSs with a large number of (often con- licting) needs. As a result of of large and often incomplete data sets, management, sensing, and also the evolving nature of these advanced systems, computational intelligence (CI) techniques gift a natural solution to optimal energy potency, energy security, and occupant comfort in buildings. The article further presents an overall design where CI can be employed in BEMSs and concludes with a case study of the sensible applications of using CI techniques in the BEMS domain.
