3-D Analytical Model of Helical Winding PM Machines Including Rotor Eddy Currents

PROJECT TITLE :

3-D Analytical Model of Helical Winding PM Machines Including Rotor Eddy Currents

ABSTRACT:

Helical windings (or zigzag windings) are utilized in a number of applications, however, in electrical machines, mainly utilized in low-power, high-speed permanent magnet (PM) brushless dc machines because of the price effectiveness of the winding type while maintaining cheap performance. Sometimes, helical windings are used for low-voltage applications because of their spiral kind, that makes them most appropriate for a little variety of turns. In high-speed electrical machines, such an occasional range of turns are applicable. It's apparent that prime-speed PM machines suffer from rotor eddy-current losses, that in some cases could cause PM demagnetization thanks to overheating. The performance of the machine is compromised by these losses; hence, they need to be considered during the look procedure. There are many papers analyzing the magnetic field of those machines using helical windings; however, none of them present a easy and precise electromagnetic model of a machine with the helical winding. This paper presents an analytical approach to model the resulting three-D magnetic field of the helical winding, considering eddy currents within the conducting media of the rotor. The model is verified with the 3-D finite-component technique by means of comparing magnetic field and rotor eddy-current losses.
