Burst-Modulated Waveforms Optimize Electrical Stimuli for Charge Efficiency and Fiber Selectivity

PROJECT TITLE :

Burst-Modulated Waveforms Optimize Electrical Stimuli for Charge Efficiency and Fiber Selectivity

ABSTRACT:

We demonstrate another technique of coming up with electrical stimuli-termed burst modulation—for producing completely different patterns of nerve fiber recruitment. By delivering electrical charge in bursts of “pulsons”—miniature pulses-rather than as long continuous pulses, our methodology will optimize the waveform for stimulation efficiency and fiber selectivity. In our in vivo validation experiments, whereas maintaining C fibers of the rat vagus nerve at activation with totally different waveforms, the burst-modulated waveform created 11p.c less A fiber activation than the standard rectangular pulse waveform (rectangular: of maximal A response, mean normal error of the mean; burst-modulated: ), that equates to a twenty% reduction in an exceedingly fiber response magnitude. Additionally, the burst-modulated waveform needed 45p.c less stimulus charge per section to keep up fifty% C fiber activation (rectangular: ; burst-modulated: ). Burst-modulated waveforms produced consistent patterns of fiber recruitment among and across animals, that indicate that our strategies of stimulus style and response analysis give a reliable means to review neurostimulation and deliver therapy.
