Parasitic Currents in Stray Paths of Some Topologies of YASA AFPM Machines: Trend With Machine Size

PROJECT TITLE :

Parasitic Currents in Stray Paths of Some Topologies of YASA AFPM Machines: Trend With Machine Size

ABSTRACT:

In some topologies of yokeless and segmented armature (YASA) axial flux permanent-magnet (AFPM) machines, the actual frame structure needed to fasten floating teeth can originate stray methods where parasitic currents may circulate. This paper investigates how the amplitude of those currents and therefore the connected additional Joule losses rely on the machine size. Reference is created to wind energy generators, rated from some tens of kilowatts up to some megawatts. The developed model is principally based on wind turbine basic knowledge of vendor data sheets, and on the quantities evaluated and tested in 2 YASA AFPM prototypes, rated 50 and 200 kW.
