Thermal modelling and analysis for offshore submarine high-voltage direct current cable crossings

ABSTRACT:

With an increasing range of offshore high-voltage direct current wind farm comes planned, submarine cable crossings become inevitable. It is vital to accurately rate these circuits, as a result of if high temperatures occur at crossing points, the cable could age prematurely. At gift, the IEC60287-3-3 crossing rating methodology is inapplicable to such crossings due to a failure of the 'Image’ theory, and it is challenging to hold out alternative analytical studies because of the difficulties in modelling the subsea thermal atmosphere. As a resolution, this study presents a replacement finite component analysis approach to check the thermal performance of submarine crossings under various continuous rating combos and rock protection layer conditions, to supply tips for crossing operation. With specialise in the free thermal convection mechanism at intervals the rock layer, the importance of this mechanism is highlighted in an exceedingly quantitative manner. It shows that when the free convection is preserved, the upper circuit will operate safely with its stand-alone rating no matter the crossing; while the lower circuit could require a de-rating if its stand-alone rating is thermally restricted.
