In a Smart Grid, a High-Efficiency Bidirectional Buck-Boost Converter for Photovoltaic and Energy Storage Systems

PROJECT TITLE :

High-Efficiency Bidirectional Buck-Boost Converter for Photovoltaic and Energy Storage Systems in a Smart Grid

ABSTRACT:

One of the major components of a solar and energy storage system is the innovative bidirectional buck-boost converter proposed here (ESS). Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM) is used in conventional bidirectional buck-boost converters for energy storage systems (ESSs). Nevertheless, DCM operation results in significant waves in the output voltage and current, and an inefficient transfer of power from one state to the other. The proposed converter features a new combination structure of a cascaded buck-boost converter and an auxiliary capacitor to increase the performance of the conventional converter. The suggested converter's integrated construction decreases output current ripple and boosts efficiency by providing a current path. For testing purposes, a prototype converter was developed and tested. More than 98% of the proposed converter's power is converted into useful work, with output voltage and current ripples less than 5.14 V pp and 7.12 A pp, respectively. Input voltage was 160 V, switching frequency was 45 kHz, output voltage ranged from 80-320 V, and power output was 16-160 W. The proposed converter has better performance than the standard converter, according to the findings of the experiments.
